The Overrule

Last week, the longest word in the sentence. This week, the shortest.

"I." One letter, and the only word that can overrule.

In Descartes' cogito, ergo sum, the self comes first. Alone, certain, needing no one. In prompting, the self is revealed through relation. We discover what we think by what we ask, what we accept, and what we resist.

"Resistance to the organized mass can be effected only by the man who is as well organized in his individuality as the mass itself." - Carl Jung

Jung, father of analytical psychology, imagined a collective unconscious. The sediment of everyone who came before, moving beneath each individual mind. Something we inherited, now simulated in a model.

Because the model is the voice of everyone. The statistical compression of everything our profession (and every other) has ever written and drawn. That gives it a textureless grain running toward whatever is most probable.

Ask the model for a plan and it leans toward the expected plan. Ask it for a phrase and it offers the phrase everyone would choose. It does not reflect you back. It reflects you back slightly more normal than you are. Every suggestion accepted without a fight is a small, invisible concession to the average.

Agency is not a software feature. It is a practice of the self. And the practice has a location. That precise moment when the probable answer sits on your screen, fluent and reasonable and almost right, and something in you (taste, judgment, every mundane Tuesday the model never lived) says no.

Look back at your last ten exchanges with AI. Drafts, details, diagrams. Find one moment where you overruled it and the overrule was the best thing in the work.

If you can find one, you are discovering.
If you can't, how long have you been agreeing with the average?

One word left in the sentence. It is not about what we produce.

Part 5, next Monday. you are, therefore I AM.

Your turn
