ARCHIKAOS

Architecture is being disrupted, and some days it feels like everything is coming apart. Even disruptors can't control the shape of disruption. But we do choose our response. I'm sharing more of my writing and speaking on AI, computation, and the tools remaking practice, in hopes of influencing your response to be calm.

Not everything here will arrive as a series, but I'm starting with a breakdown of You Are, Therefore I Am. Most of what follows will stand alone, published when it's ready. All of this is thinking in public, which means every position is a working position. Thanks for being part of the process.

I inverted Descartes' I think, therefore I am for the age of the prompt, then read the result the way scholars read scripture. One word at a time (exegesis). On the surface, it's about what we do to AI. Underneath, it's about what using AI does to us.

Every practice has its own. The workflow nobody will touch. The model that fights back. The template three people understand and one person trusts. The tool the firm bought two years ago and never opened.

How I work

Create first, critique second.

You cannot critique and create simultaneously. Make the first mark on the page and go from there. Design is iterative, and there's only so much you can hold in your head.

Requirements are an armature, not a mold.

Standards are a framework for achieving more, not a box to stay inside. There are many paths through the requirements, but you cannot ignore them.

Grade the overrule, not the output.

The question for any AI-polished deliverable. Where in this did a human disagree? A review that can't locate the disagreement is reviewing the machine, not the designer.

"How's everyone doing tonight?"

One of my all-time favorite comedians warns about opening with this cliché. It's not a very effective way to connect with the audience, and it signals you have nothing better to say.

Why goats, you ask? Well, the goat has been my mark since architecture school. Goats are calm on terrain that scares everything else. They are sure-footed, load-bearing, and up for the occasional playful headbutt. Meeting chaos with calm.
